About me and Essential Take On Life…

Welcome to Essential Take On Life!

My name is Ann Katrine.
All my friends and family call me AK – you can too!

I am 25 and I live in Copenhagen (Denmark) with my husband, Ronni, my brother-in-law, Jonas and our friend, Jeff.
As I am getting an Essential Take on Life, I want to share that with you – my ups and downs, ideas and findings.

What you need to know about me:

There are so many labels I could use to describe myself to you… Here are just a few, in no particular order:

  • PCOS fighter
  • Wife to a loving and supportive man
  • Law student
  • Blogger
  • Citizen of the world
  • Book worm and nerd
  • Dreamer
  • Believer in natural remedies
  • Earthling
  • Daughter and sister
  • Down syndrome advocate

The dream, for me, is to live a loving life with my husband; creating a home filled with joy and laughter; becoming self-sufficient by creating a wonderful garden and using frugal ways to reach our dreams.
Having a garden is in the future – for now I am seeking a way to live naturally and connected to earth in an apartment in the middle of a big city.

What it is all about…

The background for this blog is a very personal story. For now I will give you the short version.

I have PCOS – but for many years I didn’t know what I had, only that something was very wrong in my body.
I started showing symptoms when I was about 9 years old, and when I reached my teen years, things had gone from bad to worse.
While most doctors would not listen to me, and told me that everything would normalize, one doctor told me that I would probably never be able to have kids of my own based on what I told her was happening in me.

I was 15 at the time.
My dream was having a family and kids.

Naturally this news changed me.
As the symptoms got worse, my plan for the future morphed into a plan of living a life on the go, alone, working for international companies – being the ultimate business woman.
I joined law school in Denmark, moved away from friends and family to give myself a new beginning.

(Now it is getting really personal –if you get grossed out easily don’t read this part!)

Things kept getting worse.
By 2012 (at age 22) I had had a heavy period non-stop for five years!
And no  – I do not mean regular ones that lasts 7-9 days and then go away for 3 weeks… I mean 1 period that lasted 5 years!
I had extreme pain every day; I was fatigued by the blood loss I was living with – I was miserable.

The doctors ended up finding a large tumor in my uterus that year – luckily it wasn’t cancerous.

At that point I needed something to change in my life.
So I rearranged my entire apartment for some visual change and signed up for online dating just to do something new.

And I met the love of my life there.

Today we are married and planning the future.
The doctors have given me a diagnosis and now I am spending a lot of time trying to find a way to get my hormones and life into balance.
My doctor is telling me that there is a small chance I might have kids of my own. It is all so new to me!

With my new life, new dreams for the future have bloomed – with my husband I now plan to build a loving and self-sustainable home.
We are beginning a new chapter of our lives together.   And I want to share our journey as we get an Essential Take on Life.
